About roots
Quarries. A place where biodiversity has been completely destroyed and is in essential need of recovery.
La Falconera Quarry is based in The National Park of Garraf. Exploring the world of this park, taught me about the human and natural activity in the area, stimulating this coexistence in my proposal. Creating zones for the species in protection and paths for walkers, designed by the original contour lines, conceptually bringing back the old mountain.
Every space deserves its social heartbeat. The POD. Located on the paths, the pods offer basic needs for walkers, along with a self-service juice and acai bar and a multi-use room for activities aiming to boost physical and mental wellbeing. The POD acquires a Zero Carbon design through natural ventilation and lighting, solar panels, a water harvesting system and 0km limestone from the quarry.
This project can be applied to any quarry in the world, by using its original contour lines as paths, creating zones for protected species and using the stone from the quarry.
“Just like a fingerprint each quarry will share the same DNA but with a slightly different design.”
La Falconera Quarry
La Falconera quarry, owned by Promsa, is located in The National Park of Garraf on limestone bedrock.

Steps to bring quarries back to life:
How to restore the quarry?
1

A layer of rocks, followed by a layer of gravel and soil will be used to fill the deepest layer of the quarry, promoting the growth of vegetation.

With these plans, there is hope for a successful restoration of La Falconera Quarry.

“Design a space for walkers in balance with the protection of the local species”

These were the original contour lines before the quarry activity took place.

This is what the mountain looks like now with the quarry.

This is the proposal, a way of conceptually bring back the original mountain by using its contours as spaces for the species in protection and paths for walkers.

These were the original contour lines before the quarry activity took place.
The Contours
The original contour lines will be used to create 3 zones with the species in protection of The National Park of Garraf. The green zone is dedicated to the protection of the Margallo Palm, the blue zone is for the Hermann Tortoise and the pink zone will conserve the Bonelli's Eagle. These zones are accessed through there colored walking paths.

Creating a fun yet educational space for the visitors, along with dedicating areas for protecting and conserving the species in protection of the park.

What interior space can I design in the quarry?
